Laurent MOURGUET, crossbar at the beginning of the XIXth century a difficult period. The silk workers miss work, unemployement prevails. Laurent Mourguet to survive takes the initiative to become merchant-open. He becomes even puller of teeth! With force to attend fairs and markets with keep of skilful smooth talkers, artist himself, it is provided with a castelet to attract, thanks to Punchinello, its customers. Then forsaking Punchinello, puppet sails about it at the time, he creates GUIGNOL. Consequently, this sympathetic nerve character with the wood head takes part of the people of modest means. He clamps the social injustice, scratches his inexhaustible liveliness the middle-class persons as the regional or national authorities. His delicious sound accent, his rebellious spirit, his impertinence, his impetuous side but good child make GUIGNOL a popular and attaching |

Surrounded with his « fenotte » MADELON, with the grumbling character, but mostly proud of him; supported by friendly inseparable friend GNAFRON, « regrolleur » of his state, with the placid temperament, in the bass voice and wine amateur, GUIGNOL knew how to cross the decades for the greatest pleasure of the adults at first, and then the children. |

Due to travelling, having been exported, GUIGNOL became a universal puppet. PUPPET is, throughout the world, the alive signature of our city and one of our best ambassadors.
The tradition of the theater of GUIGNOL is immortalized in his birthplace by four fixed theaters and some itinerant theaters today. His historic origins are preciously preserved to the International Museum of the Puppet.

The Gadagne Museum : historical museum of Lyon and international pupet museum |
Located in Vieux-Lyon this museum is set in a 16th Century residence of Hotel Renaissance. The Lyon Historical Museum includes the International Puppet's Museum since 1950. Beside Guignol, we can find numerous puppet models and shades of the whole world.
The museum is opened from Wednesday till Sunday from 11 am till 6.30 pm,
except certain feastdays.
